SSD & Speed Upgrades

The biggest speed jump most laptops can get.

An SSD upgrade typically takes a tired machine from 2-minute boots to 15-second boots. RAM and SSD together often unlock years more useful life — at a fraction of replacement cost.

Bottom line: $99 System Exam tells you whether an upgrade makes sense for your specific machine. If it does, we'll quote it flat-rate. If it doesn't (or replacement is smarter), we'll tell you that too.

When an upgrade is the right call

  • Machine is structurally sound but feels painfully slow
  • Still has a spinning hard drive (HDD) instead of an SSD
  • Has 4 GB or 8 GB of RAM and you do real work on it
  • Boots take more than a minute
  • You don't want to migrate everything to a new computer
  • Repair cost is well under replacement cost

When replacement is smarter

  • The chassis is broken or hinges failing
  • Multiple components are degrading at once
  • RAM is soldered (not upgradeable) and starting at 4 GB
  • Manufacturer support / parts availability ended years ago
  • Repair cost approaches new-machine cost

The System Exam tells you which side of that line your machine sits on.

Common upgrades

SSD upgrade (with OS migration)

The biggest single performance win on aging laptops. We replace the spinning hard drive (or older SATA SSD) with a modern SSD and migrate your OS, apps, and files cleanly so you boot up to the same desktop you had — just much faster. Typical turnaround: 1–2 business days from approval.

RAM upgrade

If your machine is upgradeable (most laptops 5–8 years old still are), bumping from 4 GB → 8 GB or 8 GB → 16 GB makes a real difference for browser-heavy workflows, multitasking, and video calls. We confirm compatibility before quoting.

Battery replacement

If the laptop is otherwise good but the battery is at 30% original capacity, a new battery is a high-leverage refresh. Especially for laptops that travel.

Thermal service

Cleaning, fan replacement, fresh thermal paste/pads. If your machine is throttling itself because of heat, you're losing performance and shortening its life. Often packaged with an SSD upgrade.

FAQ

Speed upgrade questions.

Will an SSD really make that much difference?

On a machine with a spinning drive — yes, dramatically. It's the most cost-effective performance upgrade you can do.

Will I lose my files?

No. We migrate the OS, apps, and files. You boot up to the same desktop, same documents, same email — just faster.

How long does an SSD upgrade take?

Typically 1–2 business days from approval, including OS migration.

Is it worth upgrading an old laptop?

Sometimes yes (a 7-year-old laptop with an SSD + RAM bump can feel new), sometimes no (if other components are failing or the chassis is rough). The System Exam answers that for your specific machine.

Do you sell SSDs / RAM separately?

We supply the parts as part of the upgrade quote. Bring-your-own-part is generally not recommended — compatibility matters and we warranty the work end-to-end.
